    Description
Texte : Nationalisation makes prices soar. Coal. Since nationalisation - the average pit-head price of coal has risen by over 12s. a ton ; the industry incurred a loss of nearly £4 million up to the end of 1950 ; the output of deep-mined coal in 1950 was 27 million tons less than in 1939 and last winter we had to import coal ; exports of British coal in 1950 were 30 million tons less than in 1938 ; fuel crises in 1947 and again last winter cost the nation millions of pounds. Another fuel crisis is threatened for this winter. Transport. During its first three years the British Transport Commission - which controls the nationalised railways and road transport - lost over £40 million. Before rail freight charges were increased by 16 per cent., the nationalised railways were losing half-a-million pounds a week. A further increase of 10 percent. was sanctioned this year. Road haulage charges have been increased and dearer petrol and higher purchase tax on commercial vehicles have added over £80 million a year to the cost of road transport. All these increases mean higher passenger fares and a higher cost of living. Electricity. Since nationalisation the average price of electricity has gone up on an average by about 8 per cent. In 1950 - under nationalisation - the average price of gas was increased by about is in the £. Increased transport charges since then will cost the gas industry an extra £2 million a year, and it is expected that this will increase the price of gas again. The socialists have threatened to nationalise sugar, cement, industrial assurance, meat wholesaling and water supplies. This means more losses and higher prices for everyone. Conservatives will call a halt to nationalisation, set steel free, give private road hauliers an opportunity of coming back into the business, and ensure that the other nationalised industries operate with maximum efficiency. It's time for a change ! Vote conservative. GE.10. Printed by Wm.
